Russian Roulette

By Curtis Robbins

Every chamber is loaded but one.

I've written letters to a lot of employers.
who have advertised about
available positions
and if interested apply.

It was worth trying, or so I thought.
It sounded so ideal
so perfect
so definitive
so excited---in fact,
too good to be true.

I waited
and waited
and waited
and waited.
The ad said not to call.
week after week
I waited
and waited
and waited.

It seems that none of the bullet holes
on my resume
struck a chord.

Typically, my qualifying deafness
left them with a bang.
