The Literary Society at the Kentucky School for the Deaf organized. Literary societies were formed at a number of residential schools for the Deaf across the nation and began to wane in popularity in the 1970s.

Little Paper Family Editorial Association established consisting of predominantly the editors of various publications at residential schools for the Deaf across the nation. (At this time, there were at least 35 publications across 29 states, the first beginning 1849.)
